GPS tracker & kill switch / Recommended trackers

GPS trackers & kill switches I recommend

Three brands I install and would put in my own car. All three are hardwired, hidden behind the dash, and have a kill switch you control from your phone. I'm not paid by any of these brands.

Prices are what these sell for today and move with sales.

Two things to know before you buy

1. They are all subscription based. The tracker is only half the cost. Every one of these needs a monthly or yearly plan, or prepaid airtime, or it does nothing: no location, no alerts, no kill switch. Spy Spot and Trackhawk bill monthly or yearly; PassTime sells the airtime up front with the unit. The plan prices are on each card below.

2. The kill switch doesn't fit every car. These kill switches are only made to work on vehicles with a traditional starter wire system at the ignition switch. They often don't work on certain models or on push-to-start cars, where the start signal runs through a computer instead of a wire.

Text me your year, make and model before you order and I'll tell you if it will work on your car. If the kill switch won't work, I can still install the GPS side, and on some push-to-start cars there's a different kind of kill switch I can do instead.

The three I recommend

Best value

Spy Spot GV53MG

Hardware about $78 · subscription required, from $9.95/mo

The one most people go with. A small 4G tracker that wires into the car and has the kill switch built in. Updates every 60 seconds while the car is running, keeps six months of history, and you turn the starter on or off from the Spy Spot app or website.

Plans: Premium is $15/mo paid yearly or $18 month to month, with 1-minute updates, the kill switch any time, and speed alerts. The low-cost plan is $9.95/mo paid yearly or $12 month to month, with updates once an hour and the kill switch once a day.

Keep in mind: on the cheap plan the car only checks in once an hour, so get Premium if the kill switch is the point. No plan, no tracking. Not made for electric vehicles.

Best app & warranty

Trackhawk VL03

Hardware $104.99 · subscription required, $22/mo or $216/yr

The step up. Same idea, hardwired with a kill switch you control from the app, plus a backup battery that keeps reporting for up to 48 hours if someone cuts the power wire. Lifetime warranty on the hardware while you're subscribed, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Keep in mind: the highest monthly cost of the three, and the subscription covers everything, including the kill switch. Not waterproof, so it stays inside the cabin. Trackhawk itself says to have the kill switch installed professionally.

Fleet, rental & dealer pick

PassTime Trax SI

About $120–145 · airtime prepaid with the unit, renews yearly after

The brand buy-here-pay-here lots and rental fleets run on. A wired tracker with the starter interrupt built in, sold with the airtime prepaid, so there's no monthly bill. Tamper, speed and geofence alerts, trip and mileage reports. Door lock and unlock is an add-on module.

Keep in mind: PassTime sells through its own online portals and partner programs, not Amazon, and the airtime term depends on the program. Once a unit is activated it can't be returned. For a lot of cars, PassTime sells direct and I can do the installs on your schedule with photo and VIN documentation.

Send me the listing or a photo of the box. If it's a hardwired tracker with a starter relay, I can almost always install it, even if it isn't one of these three.

Not sure what your car needs?

Text me your year, make, model and what you want done. I'll tell you what fits and what it costs.

I come to you anywhere in Metro Atlanta & North Georgia.
